Wichita Athletics Track Club 5th Annual Spring Invitational Track Meet
Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The Sport Tournament and Event Management class at Wichita State University is looking for volunteers to assist in putting on a youth track meet to support the Wichita Athletics Summer track club. Athletes on this team use the money raised at the meet to subsidize transportation to other local and national track meets. The Wichita Athletics Track Club (WATC) is a non-profit organization that relies on fundraisers, sponsors, and participant fees.
Volunteers will assist in a variety of areas:


· Running specific events
· Registration and admissions process for participating teams
· Recording/posting results
· Set-up and break down of the meet itself

-Lunch and drinks will be provided for those volunteers working over the lunch hour
-Dress according to the weather as the event will be held outdoors
(Suggestions: sweat shirt, rain gear, hat, bottled water, sun-screen etc.)

Location: Northwest High School Track

Wichita, KS 67212

Time(s): Track Meet set-up – 7:00 AM
Registration and Admission – 7:30 AM
Field events – 8:30 AM
Track events – 9:30 AM
Break down – Following final event, around 3:00 PM

Reporting: Check in at the Admissions table and identify yourself as a volunteer. Report to the Volunteer table and a coordinator will provide further instructions regarding your assignment(s)/responsibilities.

Training: Instructions will be provided for individual events both on-sight and through email

Language Arts:
Remember to be practicing for the Wax Museum on March 12th. All students who turn in a signed sheet that says they practiced their speech in front of their parent will receive extra credit. Very few students have taken me up on this offer!

Language Arts:
Timed our speeches and began to read, The Dog of Pompeii!

Social Studies:
We worked on our Build-A Books and finished up our Chapter Review. There is a test over Rome on Monday!
Economics:
Students researched their stocks to see what to purchase on their Opening Day of the Stock Market Game.

Community Service Opportunity:

Envision provides resources to people with impaired vision. They are building a recorded book library through their Eyes for Others project. The project is in need of student volunteers to record books for the library. Minimum age is 3rd grade, so younger siblings can participate as well. Contact Bonnie Cochran at Envision. bonnie.cochran@envisionus.com . Envision is located at 610 N. Main St.

Language Arts:
Students had a session in the library today about cyberbullying! Students should be memorizing their speeches at this point. They will be graded on their memorization by Friday of next week.

Social Studies:
Students finished up lesson 8-6 and began working on the Chapter Review. There will be a test on Monday over chapter 8- Rome.
Economics:
We will review the concept of opportunity cost and then move on to Parent Companies.

Youth Days of Caring 2009
Who: You and other young people
What: Making a difference in the community
When: Spring Break, March 16 - 20, 2009
Where: Nonprofit agencies in and around Wichita
Why: Because our community needs you

Thank you for your interest in Youth Days of Caring 2009. To participate, simply:

1. Select your three favorite projects from this booklet.
2. Starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, February 13, register for your project(s) by calling 267-0202. Please provide: your full name, date of birth, home address, phone number, project(s), and project days/shifts that you want to volunteer.
3. A permission/release form will be mailed to you. You and your parent/guardian MUST sign this form and return it by Tuesday,March 10, in order to participate.
4. If you are volunteering as part of a group (e.g., church, temple, scout, school) you MUST sign this form and return it by Thursday,March 5, in order to participate.
5. After returning your release form, you may pick up your free T-shirt at United Way of the Plains office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, at 245 North Water.
6. You need to have your own transportation to and from agencies.
7. Please wear your T-shirt when you volunteer during Youth Days of Caring.

To contribute and be sensitive to the social, health, educational, nutritional,
physical, spiritual, recreational and intellectual well being and advocacy of it’s
patrons.
Project: Cleaning and dusting furniture and shelves; washing windows,
cleaning out cupboards, vacuuming and other miscellaneous tasks.

Time: 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10
Minimum age: 12

Downtown Day Care Center

To provide a safe, educationally enriched environment for children at an
affordable cost to families from diverse financial backgrounds.
Project: Moving sand on the playground, painting lines on the sidewalk and
cleaning up the break room for teachers. Address: 944 S. Topeka
Date: Monday, March 16; Wednesday, March 18 & Friday, March 20
Time: 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10 per day
Minimum age: 12


His Helping Hands

To manage and coordinate the necessary resources and activities that will
enable Central Christian Church and it’s partners in ministry to assist people in
the local community who struggle with basic physical and life needs by sharing
with them material goods that God has provided through the generosity of good
people.
Project: Sort and hang clothes, sort and organize houseware items and
organize warehouse.Address: 1441 E. 37th St. N.
Date: Monday, March 16; Wednesday, March 18 & Friday, March 20
Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10-15 per shift
Minimum age: 12
Please bring a sack lunch if working all day.


Old Cowtown Museum

Old Cowtown Museum is an educational institution dedicated to preserving and
presenting the history of Wichita & Sedgwick County, Kansas from 1865 - 1880.
Project: Projects may include picking up trash, clearing fields and pasture of
debris, brush removal, cleaning windows, sweeping floors and other
miscellaneous tasks. Address: 1865 W. Museum Blvd.
Date: Tuesday, March 17; Wednesday, March 18;Thursday, March 19 & Friday, March 20 Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 5-10 per day
Minimum age: 12
Please bring a sack lunch. Bring work gloves, no flip flops/sandals.

Sedgwick County Department on Aging – RSVP

To be the recognized leader in a collaborative effort towards assisting diverse
populations of older adults and persons with physical disabilities to maintain
their choice of lifestyles through education, advocacy and services.
Project: Assist staff with mailings.

Date: Monday, March 16; Tuesday, March 17; Wednesday, March 18;

To help persons with development disabilities to live, learn, work and contribute
to their communities throughout Sedgwick County.
Project: Light landscaping projects, washing windows at main facilities,
cleaning inside vehicles, general clerical (new hire packets) and filing.

Date: Tuesday, March 17; Wednesday, March 18 & Thursday, March 19
Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 8 per shift
Minimum age: 12

Trees for Life

To enable people around the world to help plant fruit trees in developing
countries. Each tree protects the environment and provides a low-cost, selfrenewing
source of food for a large number of people.

Project #1: Help sort and box up books to be sent to the Ethiopia Reads Library
in Africa. Some computer data entry may be done, too.

Thursday, March 19 & Friday, March 20
Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. / 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Project #2: Help with light to medium gardening duties such as mending fence,
turning compost bin, mowing grass, clearing old growth and trash from property,
etc.

To empower youth and their families to become healthy and productive

Project: Volunteers will assemble mailers/fliers for the upcoming Easter SunRun
fundraiser.

Language Arts:

First hour had a story teller! It was an awesome assembly.

Tenth hour students were in their Lit Circles for discussion today.



Social Studies:

Students finished reading the "Foot soldier" lesson pages 349-353, and answered the questions. We then finished watching the Roman Empire video. We learned about Caesar, Augustus, Nero, and other emperors.

China Build-A Book is due on Thurs., February 12!



Economics:

Students finished sequencing the steps to purchasing from a broker, and then read economic comic books.

Students are to be reading the next myth and also are to complete the next word part lesson.

Social Studies:
Students watched a bit of a video on rule of Caesar today and then began lesson 8-3.

Economics:
Students learned about the people who make up the stock trading floor, and how stocks are executed.
