Students are working on their introductory paragraphs in class. They will begin typing up the first four paragraphs of their research paper in class on Thursday. We have been concentrating on clear and concise thesis statements. Students also read in the Misfits through chapter 20.

Social Studies:
Today we checked the lesson 4-1 on the geography of Egypt. Then they read about the religions and government of ancient Egypt.

Students graded lesson 2-2 about surplus food and how it changed early man from being hunters and gatherers to being members of permanent settlements. Then students worked on lesson 2-3, where they learned about early villages that grew into towns, that grew into cities and finally into the first civilizations.

Students took their first test of the year. Many thought it was an easy test! Students also read about the beginning of permanent settlements. This was a result of early man' s development of agriculture.

Many people do not realize that low income and persons on welfare have limited access to personal hygiene products. One cannot, for example, use their Vision Card (“food stamps”) for the purchase of soap, shampoo, diapers, and feminine hygiene needs. Sometimes these are available at food banks but not on a regular basis. A few hygiene products can help people maintain their dignity and sense of self-esteem. This makes it possible for them to seek and maintain jobs or attend school. University Congregational Church, in collaboration with Open Door, Inter-Faith Ministries, and Breakthrough Club, has started a hygiene pantry in the downtown area that will provide hygiene products to those in need. The pantry will be open from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. The pantry will only succeed if schools and organizations are willing to assist by collecting product on our behalf. Would you consider running a product drive at your school or organization? Community Service Opportunity with Ms. Powell We will be cleaning out the Butterfly Garden on Bleckley Field. If you are interested, you may bring a rake, or other small gardening tools to clean up the garden directly after school on Wednesday April 20th. 2) Writing an eulogy about Alexander after his death. This can be from the point of view of his wife, his soldier, a Persian, or a Greek citizen. Make sure you have clear voice!
3) Create a tombstone and write what should be on it.
4) Free choice activity: write a poem, illustrate a picture, or draw a map of the territory ATG conquered.

I have not been very consistent with this blog lately. It seems that I have been out of school more often, than here lately. Hopefully, we will be in school every day for a while.

Language Arts:

We are reviewing concepts that we have learned this year. Our reading assessment will be the week of February 28th. We also have completed lesson 7 in our word study booklets, and continue reading our myths.
Projects for our myths are due on Tuesday, February 22, The students will begin presenting them next week.

Social Studies:

Students completed lesson 9-2 about famous early Greeks. There will be a quiz over this lesson tomorrow. We will work on Build-A-Books on Thursday. The China chapter will be due on February 22nd as well.
I have been busy grading the persuasive essays. I hope to have these back to all students by Tuesday of next week.

Donovan Duggins, a Robinson PIB student has been named a top ten finalist in the Red Robin Kid's Cook-Off. He created a hamburger and entered it in the contest. He was chosen from thousands of entries to fly to Denver to present his burger in front of a panel of judges to see if his burger is the winner.

There is also a fan favorite voting contest. The burger that gets the most online votes will win a prize as well. I wanted to know if you could pass this information on so that others can vote for Donovan's burger.

Wednesday: Speaking and listening: Break into groups for the Dinner party. Decide as a class who would fit best at each table.
