Why: Because our community needs you
Thank you for your interest in Youth Days of Caring 2010. To participate, simply:
1. Select your three favorite projects from this booklet.
2. Starting at 8 a.m. on Friday, February 12, register for your project(s) by calling 267-0202.
Please provide: your full name, date of birth, home address, phone number, project(s), and project days/shifts that you want to volunteer.
3. A permission/release form will be mailed to you. You and your parent/guardian MUST sign this form and return it by Tuesday, March 9, in order to participate.
4. If you are volunteering as part of a group (e.g., church, temple, scout, school) you MUST sign this form and return it by Thursday, March 4, in order to participate.
5. After returning your release form, you may pick up your free T-shirt at United Way of the Plains office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday–Friday, at 245 North Water.
6. You need to have your own transportation to and from agencies.
7. Please wear your T-shirt when you volunteer during Youth Days of Caring.
Derby Senior Activity Center
To contribute and be sensitive to the social, health, educational, nutritional, physical, spiritual, recreational and intellectual well being and advocacy of its patrons.
Project: Cleaning and dusting furniture and shelves; washing windows,
vacuuming and other miscellaneous tasks.

Date: Wednesday, March 17
Time: 1–4 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 4-6
Minimum age: 12
Downtown Day Care Center
To provide a safe, educationally enriched environment for children at an
affordable cost to families from diverse financial backgrounds.
Project: Work on the playground; painting and repairing equipment, moving
sand under equipment. Organizing books in the library

Number of volunteers needed: 10 per day

United Way Volunteer Center 5
Grandma’s Farm
To offer experiential classes and events that empower people to live simply, to create beauty, to respect Earth and to share their expanded wisdom with others.
Project: Clearing and burning brush and tree limbs from a large area, exposing the existing pit silo.

Date: Monday, March 15 & Tuesday, March 16
Time: 1–4 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10 per day
Minimum age: 12
Drinks and snacks are provided. The project will be postponed if weather is inclement. Volunteers are asked to bring jersey work gloves. Volunteers will be invited back to the farm on Saturday, March 20th for a special project to then transform the pit silo into the Earth Ship Greenhouse at Grandma’s Farm.
· His Helping Hands
To manage and coordinate the necessary resources and activities that will enable Central Christian Church and its partners in ministry to assist people in the local community who struggle with basic physical and life needs by sharing with them material goods that God has provided through the generosity of good people.
Project: Sort and hang clothes, sort and organize houseware items and
organize warehouse.

Time: 9 a.m.–noon, 1–5 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10–15 per shift
Minimum age: 12

Inter-Faith Ministries
To call people of all faiths together to build inter-religious understanding, promote justice, relieve misery and reconcile the estranged.
Project: Office work; filing, data entry, Internet research, shredding, other miscellaneous tasks.

Date: Wednesday, March 17; Thursday, March 18 & Friday, March 19
Time: 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 2–3 per day

United Way Volunteer Center 7
Kansas Aviation Museum
To collect, preserve and exhibit aircraft and aviation memorabilia with a Kansas connection.
Project: Clean and stack historic brick removed from original building.
Address: 3350 S. George Washington Blvd.
Date: Wednesday, March 17
Time: 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 20 plus
Minimum age: 12
Lunch is provided.
Sedgwick County Department on Aging–RSVP
To be the recognized leader in a collaborative effort toward assisting diverse populations of older adults and persons with physical disabilities to maintain their choice of lifestyles through education, advocacy and services.
Project: Assist staff with mailings.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
To cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma & Hodgkins disease and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Project: Office work, mailings, other miscellaneous tasks.

The Lord’s Diner
To recognize Christ, to love one another, to share life, “in the breaking of the bread.”
Project: Miscellaneous cleaning tasks

Number of volunteers needed: 20

Trees for Life
To enable people around the world to help plant fruit trees in developing
countries. Each tree protects the environment and provides a low-cost, self renewing source of food for a large number of people.
Project #1: Help sort and box up books to be sent to the Ethiopia Reads Library in Africa. Some computer data entry may be done, too.

Date: Monday, March 15; Tuesday, March 16; Wednesday, March 17;
Thursday, March 18 & Friday, March 19
Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. / 1–4 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 8 per shift
Minimum age: 12
Lunch is provided if working both shifts.
Project #2: Help with light to medium gardening duties such as mending fence,
turning compost bin, mowing grass, clearing old growth and trash from
property, etc.

Number of volunteers needed: 6, plus chaperone, per day
Minimum age: 12

Youth Horizons, Inc.
To empower youth and their families to become healthy and productive members of our community and to create a nationwide awareness of the needs of at-risk youth.
Project: Cleaning and organizing office area.
