I’ve been meaning to let you know how much Hannah and I have enjoyed volunteering at the Kansas Humane Society. It’s a great community service opportunity for kids who love animals. It requires two classes – orientation and animal handling – before you can start, and kids have to be supervised by a parent or guardian. But I talked to the volunteer coordinator there, and she said one adult (who has completed the training) could supervise two to three children, so there might be ways to work out co-op arrangements.
Anyway, Hannah and I have spent Sunday mornings (and some inservice days!) walking dogs, playing with puppies and kittens, cleaning cages and more. Over winter break, she will be working in the shelter’s spay/neuter clinic, supervising dogs as they come out of anesthesia. Lots of learning opportunities, and a great way to earn community service hours. Information available here:
